The Robot That Danced With Lady Gaga Just Stunned the Stock Market

At a Glance

  • Unitree shares soared over 460% on their Shanghai debut, closing at 845 yuan
  • IPO valued the humanoid robot maker at roughly $50 billion
  • The company raised about $900 million, oversubscribed more than 8,000 times
  • New U.S. import restrictions could dent future overseas sales

China’s robot boom just got its breakout star. Unitree, the Hangzhou-based maker of dancing, kung-fu-fighting robots, exploded onto Shanghai’s STAR Market on Wednesday, and traders couldn’t get enough.

What Happened

Unitree priced its IPO at 150.8 yuan a share. By the closing bell, it had rocketed to 845 yuan – a gain of more than 460%, though it had briefly touched 1,100 yuan earlier in the session. That’s the kind of debut most companies only dream about.

Market Reaction

The rally stood in sharp contrast to the broader market, where China’s CSI300 index slipped 3% the same day amid a global tech selloff. Unitree’s pop also blew past the average first-day gain of 279% for Chinese IPOs this year.

Why It Matters

Backed by Tencent, Alibaba and DeepSeek, and already profitable, Unitree is fast becoming the benchmark for a wave of Chinese robotics firms eyeing public listings. But the story isn’t all upside – Washington recently blacklisted Unitree from Pentagon business and moved to block future robot imports, threatening a market that makes up over 40% of its revenue.

Keep an eye on how Unitree’s rivals – Deep Robotics, AgiBot and others – time their own listings, and whether U.S. trade restrictions widen further.
