Why the Bond Market Is Watching Diesel Instead of Oil

At a Glance

  • US diesel averages $6.277 per gallon, up 71% year over year.
  • 10-year Treasury yields have tracked diesel prices more closely than crude oil since May, a first.
  • Trump’s diesel tax relief and Russian supply deal may do little to ease costs.

Rising diesel prices are fueling inflation fears, pushing bond yields higher and putting pressure on the Federal Reserve and the US economy.

Diesel prices have eased from record highs, but the damage is spreading through the economy. With fuel costs lifting transportation and production expenses, markets are bracing for inflation to remain stubbornly high.

The US national average for diesel stands at $6.277 per gallon, down from a peak of $6.528 but still 71% above year-ago levels. Crude oil, meanwhile, has climbed 56% over the same period, as damage to refining capacity in the Middle East and Russia tightens fuel supplies.

Bond Markets Feel the Heat

Since May, 10-year US Treasury yields have correlated more closely with diesel prices than crude oil for the first time ever, according to Energy Aspects co-founder Amrita Sen.

Higher fuel costs are feeding inflation concerns and strengthening expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates further. Rising Treasury yields increase borrowing costs for households and businesses.

Trump’s Fuel Fix Faces Doubts

President Donald Trump signed an order Monday deferring the 24-cent-per-gallon federal diesel tax until year-end. On Friday, he announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure diesel supplies, starting with more than 300,000 tons, followed by further deliveries.

However, farmers and truckers say the tax relief offers limited help. Energy experts also warn that Russian supplies could simply redirect fuel away from existing customers, leaving global prices largely unchanged.

What Traders Should Watch

Diesel prices, Treasury yields, inflation data, and Fed signals will remain key indicators. If fuel costs stay elevated, markets could face renewed pressure from higher interest-rate expectations.
