Oman’s Coast Under Siege: Sanctioned “Ghost Tanker” Spill Could Rival Exxon Valdez

AT A GLANCE

  • Oil now reaching Oman’s shoreline, threatening 40 km of coast and Masirah Island
  • Slick has ballooned from 45 sq km in July to over 2,000 sq km today
  • Insurer of last resort: none – the tanker carries no Western coverage
  • Compensation fund refuses payout, calling the wreck an “act of war”
  • Worst-case estimate: 40–50 million gallons lost, on par with 1989’s Exxon Valdez

A sanctioned tanker adrift since June is now bleeding oil onto Omani shores, and nobody wants to pay for the cleanup.

The Caroline Bezengi, hauling roughly 800,000 barrels of Russian crude, first ran into trouble off Yemen in June after what looked like an explosion. It ran aground days later near an Omani marine reserve home to humpback whales and rare seabirds. Since then, the spill has exploded in size, quadrupling in just two days in early August, according to Greenpeace.

MARKET REACTION

No direct market moves reported yet, but shipping insurers and sanctions analysts are watching closely, since the legal tangle around “shadow fleet” tankers could set a costly precedent for uninsured vessels moving sanctioned oil.

WHY IT MATTERS

This isn’t a routine accident cleanup. Because it’s being classified as war-related, the usual compensation fund won’t pay, leaving Oman largely on its own against a disaster that experts say could rival Exxon Valdez.

Salvage teams are racing monsoon weather to stabilize the wreck before it breaks apart entirely. Every delay raises the odds of a catastrophic, uncontained spill.
