Iran Strikes Back: Tankers Burn, Sirens Wail, and Trump Puts a Price Tag on the World’s Oil Lifeline
A third night of US airstrikes has pushed the Gulf to a boiling point, with Tehran firing missiles at tankers and military bases while Trump moves to charge the world 20% to use the strait.
Missiles Over Bahrain, Fire on the Water
The US military hit Iranian targets in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa, and Bandar Abbas overnight, aiming to weaken Iran’s ability to threaten shipping. Iran responded by striking two Emirati-flagged tankers, the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one Indian crew member and wounding eight others. Tehran also claims it knocked out radar systems tied to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, where air raid sirens have sounded three times since dawn. Jordan says it shot down four Iranian missiles that crossed into its airspace.
Trump’s 20% Toll Plan Runs Into a Legal Wall
President Trump says he’s reinstating a naval blockade on Iran and wants a 20% fee on all cargo passing through Hormuz, though legal experts note international law bars countries from charging for transit through the strait. Iran’s foreign minister dismissed the fee as excessive and insisted Iran remains the strait’s true guardian.
Oil Jumps, Stocks Wobble
Oil jumped 2% to a one-month high, with Brent near $85 and WTI close to $80 a barrel. Asian stocks were choppy, Korean shares gained over 2%, Japan’s Nikkei edged higher, and S&P futures slipped slightly as traders weighed the risk of a wider conflict.
For traders, this is a volatile mix: oil spikes, safe-haven flows into gold and the dollar, and sharp swings in risk assets tied to Gulf shipping security.
Watch for further tanker attacks, Iran’s response to the toll plan, and whether other Gulf states get pulled deeper into the fight.
