Elon Musk just took a swipe at one of philanthropy’s biggest names, reigniting debate over how billionaires should give back.
MacKenzie Scott has handed out more than $26 billion since launching her giving initiative, Yield Giving, making her one of history’s most prolific donors. But Elon Musk isn’t impressed.
Key Details
The dust-up started on June 27, when viral media account Pubity posted on X praising Scott’s $26.3 billion in donations and her status as 2025’s top megadonor. A user replying to the post claimed her spending was “making the world a worse place.” Musk jumped in to agree, replying simply: “Sadly, yes.”
Musk recently lost his brief title as the world’s first trillionaire but remains comfortably the wealthiest person alive. He’s previously called philanthropy “very hard,” telling podcast host Nikhil Kamath in December that giving money away “for the reality of goodness” is far tougher than giving it away to look good.
Scott, meanwhile, is known for the opposite approach: fast, no-strings gifts that skip the red tape typical of large donations. Melinda French Gates has also pushed back on the billionaire class, arguing many who signed the Giving Pledge haven’t lived up to it, even as she praised Scott specifically for letting her actions speak louder than her words.
Why It Matters
With over 250 billionaires having signed the Giving Pledge, public scrutiny over who actually follows through is intensifying, and that scrutiny shapes how markets view tech and finance elites.
